An Angel’s Kiss

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Tom was still feeling drowsy when Molly entered the room. She looked a bit grim faced as she came over to his bed and placed her arm on his shoulder.

“How’re you feeling, Tom? You gave me quite a fright.”

He sat up in the bed. “I’m fine, thanks. It was really good of you to come and see me, especially since I’m not actually an invalid.”

“Well, I didn’t really have a choice, once you told me you were in the hospital,”she grinned. “Although you look okay to me!”She patted his face affectionately. “So, how long will you be out of action?”

Tom looked down at his groin.

“Oh, you mean this?”

“What else could I mean?”she laughed, bringing a chair to the side of the bed and taking hold of his hand.

He grinned, “I wasn’t sure if you were talking about my state of unemployment.”

Molly grimaced. “Mmm, I heard about that; it’s all round New York – that and the buzz around Imogene’s disappearance. It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it, but I knew something had happened when you didn’t call me.”She studied him carefully for a moment. “What I’m trying to say is that even if you’d decided not to move in with me, I knew at least you would have called to let me know. Why did you lose your job, Tom? More to the point, why did your… your girl friend up and disappear like that?”

He shrugged.

“I’ve been trying to create some kind of a plausible excuse for you to accept, but I can’t think of anything to say – except that after Imogene and I had the conversation I told you about on the phone, I guess she thought that the best way out for her was to… I don’t know… go away.”

“Well, that does seem logical. But then why’d you lose your job?”

“I didn’t actually lose my job; it was a mutual decision between Andy, our Assignment Editor, and me, although, to be fair, it wouldn’t have been the same without Imogene.”He paused and looked into Molly’s eyes. “I really did want to move in with you, Molly. Only I was afraid to call and tell you because I was so embarrassed over what happened at The Times.”

Molly walked across the room to the window. Snow was starting to thicken and fall more rapidly now; a whiteout had obliterated the view from Tom’s hospital window and the thick blanket of wet white had erased the world around the hospital. Molly already knew about Tom’s losing his job because Scott had told her, but she composed her face into a picture of concern.

“I wouldn’t ridicule you, Tom – it was just a job. So what happened with Imogene? Did you two fight?”

“Not exactly. No. I told Imogene what you had said to me and how I… well, how I couldn’t live without a whole relationship with someone I felt something for… and she… well, she went up to Saint Patrick’s for guidance – she goes up there quite frequently to pray.
